The End of Downtime: 5G Multi-Network SIMs for Critical Connectivity

Cell Tower Against a Sunset Depicting Fail-Over with Resilience from Zest4 IoT

We all know what it’s like when our home broadband goes down, the kids go mad, you can’t stream your TV and if you’re working from home you struggle to get anything done. It can feel like the end of the world.

So, imagine if this is your business and your connectivity is interrupted, in that time you can’t trade, you can’t take payments and it’s not just your time but it’s your earning potential and reputation that also takes a hit.

Fail-over service is critical.

It ensures that if your business connectivity goes down you have a service that will kick in and keep your business running, think of it as a generator, if electricity fails in a hospital a generator will burst into action, maintaining all critical supplies. Fail-over connectivity solutions work in the same way.

Most fail-over services use a cellular network to supply the connectivity, so inevitably you still have a single point of failure. Think about the times have you tried to use your phone and there has been a network outage, cell site congestion, or no coverage in the area you’re in. Whatever the case, having a fail-over service that also has a single point of failure is a risk.

That’s why most of the service providers that offer a fail-over solutions are now pushing a multi network SIM as their preferred option. By using a multi network SIM, if one of the four key networks in the UK goes down, or are struggling for capacity the SIM will use one of the other three networks that are on the network list to ensure that connectivity is supplied via the best one.

Problem sorted… Or is it?

One of the ways to get a multi-network SIM to work in the UK is to purchase from a non-UK supplier and use that SIM as it roams onto the UK networks. One of the more popular options we see, are services from a Dutch network that offers a non-steered solution in the UK. But, what if their network goes down?

In the same way that we get our own UK network outages, the Netherlands will experience the same issues, I can recall some time ago reading an article that said the Netherlands Emergency services were crippled when KPN had an outage.

To mitigate all risk, Zest4 IoT have a solution.

We have launched a new 5G cellular fail-over service with even more built-in resilience. It uses all four networks, is a non-steered 5G solution and available from the UK. To give additional resilience we have the ability to add in a second (IMSI International Mobile Subscriber Identity) to the SIM card, using a completely separate cellular network supplier in a different country, using a different infrastructure.

For our Partners, this gives you four UK networks supplied by one of the major EU networks as a primary service, in the background is a second major EU network that has no affiliation to the primary one, they share no network infrastructure and have no ties. This second network also offers access to the four major UK Networks.

This gives failover and critical connectivity a level of resilience that should satisfy even the most nervous customers.

To help this service become easy to sell we have a range of tariffs and solutions (some that include a backup router) that can be tailored to the specific needs of your customer.
